Our research found that by late June, two companies out of five had cut or planned to cut their CEO\u2019s base salary in response to the crisis\u2014the majority of which reported cuts of 10 to 30 percent overall.<\/p><p>New data from <em>Chief Executive<\/em>\u2019s 2021 CEO &amp; Senior Executive Compensation survey, fielded from April through June 2021, confirms that approximately 40 percent of companies did reduce their CEO\u2019s base salary in 2020, but also finds that these cuts were not as steep as had been expected 12 months earlier\u2014a demonstration of the perseverance of companies across the U.S.<\/p><p>What\u2019s more, the majority of firms that instituted pay cuts last year have since made their CEOs whole again by reinstating pre-Covid compensation levels, and\u00a08 percent of companies surveyed in 2021 report that they increased their CEO\u2019s base salary last year in response to how their company navigated the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1810b0a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1810b0a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-95cff9a\" data-id=\"95cff9a\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0eab5d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"0eab5d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"_\/rDBpxh8tYrOcV2JQG9sG\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Covid Comp Pie Chart (August)\"><\/div><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9153721 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9153721\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-605075f\" data-id=\"605075f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5927635 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5927635\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Those are among the preliminary results from our 2021-2022 CEO and Senior Executive Compensation Report for Private Companies\u2014the largest such annual survey in the nation\u2014which is aimed at providing companies with valuable guideposts to measure themselves against their peers and strengthen their compensation strategy. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.compreport.chiefexecutive.net\/\">Learn more about the report &gt;<\/a> )<\/p><p>The pay snapback won\u2019t surprise many. With so much uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 in the spring of 2020, companies were preparing for the worst. At the time, nearly a quarter (22 percent) of the companies that had reduced or were planning to reduce their CEO\u2019s base salary were considering cuts of more than 50 percent. When polled in the spring of 2021 however, only 14 percent reported having actually reduced the CEO base salary by more than 50 percent in 2020\u201436 percent fewer companies than expected.<\/p><p>Similarly, of the companies surveyed in 2020 that had planned to cut CEO base salary, only 8 percent expected those cuts to be less than 10 percent\u2014most forecasting the cuts to be much larger\u2014but 2021 data shows 13 percent in fact stayed within that modest range.<\/p><p>Overall, our research finds that the weighted average reduction to CEO base salary in 2020, specifically among companies that cut salary due to covid, was 27 percent\u201422 percent less than what had previously been forecasted. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-120bc79 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"120bc79\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e11c2cc\" data-id=\"e11c2cc\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-824bf0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"824bf0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"_\/fd5HY9fJoK8PwHznAl5D\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Extent of Covid Cuts 2020v2021 (august)\"><\/div><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9e2455f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9e2455f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ef7ef9e\" data-id=\"ef7ef9e\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba0a039 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba0a039\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It&#8217;s important to note that for many companies, this reduction was not in place for a full year\u2014as the crisis only began to impact U.S. operations in the second quarter, and many companies eliminated the cuts within a few months. Our most recent data finds that 56 percent offered recapture opportunities\u2014in whole or in part.
