While the Sunflower State has an increasingly diverse economy, a $4 billion electric car battery plant set to open in De Sota in 2025 is poised to change the entire region. Regional planners and government officials say the 4.7-million-square-foot Panasonic plant will drive significant growth on the K-10 corridor between Lawrence and Kansas City. Precision manufacturer KMW announced in April 2024 a $105 million investment in a new North American headquarters and state-of-the-art production facility in Sterling that will create 251 new jobs.
