But while the emergency is over, the dam\u00adage\u2014to the economy, to companies, to wages\u2014will still leave a mark. CEOs are not immune.<\/p><p>To provide a more accurate picture of CEO and se\u00adnior executive compensation in the U.S., Chief Exec\u00adutive Group Research collects annual pay data from more than 1,500 private companies and segments it by company size, sector and ownership type. A new analysis of the numbers from our <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefexecutive.net\/compensationreport\/\">2024-25 CEO &amp; Se\u00adnior Executive Compensation Report<\/a> shows private company CEO pay has effectively stalled during the past few years.<\/p><h4>Inflation Pain<\/h4><p>From 2020 to 2024, average wages in the U.S. exploded 26 percent, narrowly outpacing a 21 percent growth in prices over that period, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Center for Ameri\u00adcan Progress.<\/p><p>CEO pay, meanwhile, hasn\u2019t grown nearly as fast, leaving median CEO comp underwater compared to inflation. Our data shows private company CEOs have experienced an 18 percent increase in their base salary from 2020 to 2024, including the wage recovery from the pandemic, when many CEOs chose to temporarily forgo their salaries to keep their companies afloat. If you adjust that for the average pace of price increases (21 percent, as previously noted), CEO base salary has actually decreased by 2.8 percent.<\/p><p>In 2024, the median base salary (excluding bonus, equity and benefits) among private U.S. company CEOs was $325,000 (for reference: the median S&amp;P 500 CEO earned $1.2 million). The median perfor\u00admance bonus expected to be paid out to private compa\u00adny CEOs for 2024\u2014if the company\u2019s targets are hit\u2014is $100,000 (versus $3 million for S&amp;P 500 CEOs).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f808d7a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f808d7a\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4873812 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"4873812\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script id=\"infogram_0__\/fR5KL5gvdgse8A5bLPlW\" title=\"2024 CEO Comp: Public v Private\" src=https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?MBO type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f9ddde e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5f9ddde\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-302df53 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"302df53\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But that bonus number has re\u00admained unchanged for four years, according to our research.<\/p><p>For 2025, CEOs expect an average increase of 3.3 percent in their base salary, to $335,725. That rate of in\u00adcrease is higher than the current lev\u00adel of inflation but still slightly lower than the current wage growth rate of 3.8 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bonus data for 2025 isn\u2019t yet available, of course, but our data shows private companies are planning to set modest targets again in 2025, with the median bonus award expected to remain unchanged for another year, at $100,000.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f8202c8 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f8202c8\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a0a08f elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"0a0a08f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script id=\"infogram_0__\/xd27roTE3rk9oxLV76Yf\" title=\"Base Salary Change: All Employee Types 2022-25\" src=https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?MBW type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a70719 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9a70719\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0be1e39 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0be1e39\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Bonus Blues<\/h4><p>A caveat here, though: The per\u00adformance bonuses of many private company CEOs may not material\u00adize, or at least not fully. Thanks to economic headwinds, CEOs have not hit their full bonus goals since 2021, with a median realized bonus payout of $80,000 in 2023, for ex\u00adample\u201480 percent of the $100,000 target\u2014or just $77,920 when adjust\u00aded for inflation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4d0db1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c4d0db1\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8996e01 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"8996e01\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<script id=\"infogram_0__\/Y4U7psN7dVYFmklYn5kz\" title=\"2023 CEO Median Equity\" src=https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?YI4 type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-095e974 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"095e974\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-60ca069 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"60ca069\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For the purposes of benchmarking 2024, a good year for many business\u00ades, we can assume CEOs will earn the full bonus target of $100,000. This brings the total median cash com\u00adpensation of a private U.S. company CEO to $425,000 in 2024 (before ad\u00adjusting for inflation).<\/p><p>Equity gains will make up some of the difference, to be sure, but maybe not as much as you\u2019d think. Our analysis finds that the median private company CEO in the U.S. owns approximately 9 percent of their company\u2019s equity, for a value of $1.5 million. But while S&amp;P 500 CEOs earn half of their annual compensation from stock awards (a bump of approximately $7 million), most private company CEOs do not typically receive new equity grants\u2014or even quantified equity gains\u2014each year because most private companies do not value themselves annually.
