Work for 275 Years<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 as well as a nifty animation that\u2019s worth checking out.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a decent theme, but perhaps not as interesting as some other years. Last year, it was\u2014natch\u2014 TrumpFear that drove the story.\u00a0\u201cSince taking office on Jan. 20, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/26\/business\/ceo-compensation-pay-president-donald-trump.html\">businessman-turned-politician has met with hundreds of executives<\/a>, including at least 41 of last year\u2019s 200 best-paid C.E.O.s, a <em>New York Times<\/em> analysis shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #305c99;\"><em>Chief Executive<\/em> Presents the Definitive Guide to Executive Compensation in Private Companies. <a href=\"https:\/\/research.chiefexecutive.net\/compreport\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Back it 2015, there was hope. Comeuppance was in the air. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/29\/business\/top-ceo-pay-fell-yes-fell-in-2015.html\">Top C.E.O. Pay Fell \u2014 Yes, Fell \u2014 in 2015<\/a>\u201d \u201cAll of which raises a tantalizing prospect: Has executive pay finally peaked? Have the C.E.O.s and the compensation committees that set their pay discovered something approaching modesty?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>This is, of course, not to encourage weeping or the gnashing of teeth for the 200-best paid public company CEOs. They don&#8217;t need it. They know they\u2019re going to take these hits \u2014 it\u2019s part of the job. As <em>The Times<\/em> reminds, they&#8217;re well compensated (if the bulk of your pay is tied to the market, it will rise in a bull market as this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=901826\">2006 paper points out<\/a>) and the ones I&#8217;ve met are a pretty thick-skinned bunch.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that looking at CEO pay by looking through the lens of\u00a0the top 200 best-paid CEOs tells you nothing about most CEO pay.<\/p>\n<p>So, in an equally predictable spring ritual (which goes back <a href=\"https:\/\/chiefexecutive.net\/getting-real-about-ceo-pay\/\">at least as far as 2013<\/a>) let&#8217;s remind everyone about the reality. There are nearly 6 million companies in the United States, and fewer than 4,000 of them are public companies.\u00a0<em>Chief Executive<\/em> does the largest annual survey of private company comp in the U.S. and \u2014 surprise \u2014 the numbers are somewhat different than the ones in <em>The Times<\/em>.\u00a0(For\u00a0more information, go to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefexecutive.net\/compreport\">www.ChiefExecutive.net\/compreport<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Private Company Median CEO Comp (2016 actuals, the most recent data we have\u2014we&#8217;re in the midst of our latest survey) was <strong>$361,558. <\/strong>At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics pegs 2017 median earnings for all occupations at <strong>$50,620.<\/strong> That&#8217;s a CEO-to-worker pay ratio of 7.14. A gap, to be sure (yes, people who run companies make a lot more than most people who work at companies) but hardly the story-topping 4,987x at Mattel for former CEO Margaret Georgiadis, who left the company after vastly underperforming the market.<\/p>\n<p>Median pay for the Top 200 on the Times list? <strong>$17.5 million<\/strong>\u2014more than 48x the median pay for private CEOs in our survey.<\/p>\n<p>One final, equally predictable note: In 2015, we did a deep dive on the numbers, below. We found the biggest determinants of pay were company size and public ownership. As you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n<p>Happy spring.
